Shade, a stream and short access

From the west of Tirol right through to the east, there’s something for everyone.

All the areas have short access, are (to a certain extent) family friendly and some even offer places to cool off or barbecue areas. This means that long days of climbing are also well within the realm of possibility.

1. Fernergries | Kaunertal

Combining climbing and Via Ferrata/Iron Way? Nowhere does this work quite as well as in the beautiful Kaunertal. Situated at an altitude of just under 2,000 metres amidst stunning scenery, the Fernergries Rock Climbing Area, with its massive granite slabs, is just waiting to be scaled.

Thanks to its many easy routes, the Rock Climbing Area is ideal for children and Beginners. Anyone who hasn’t had their fill of climbing in the area can also tackle the ‘Holderli Seppl’ Via Ferrata/Iron Way straight afterwards.

The only downside is the 25-euro toll charge payable on the Kaunertal Glacier Road on the way up. But once you’ve immersed yourself in the stunning scenery up there, it’s easy to overlook that!

2. Mötz

The almost brand-new Mötz Rock Climbing Area is still an absolute hidden gem for hot summer’s days! The Rock Climbing Area is situated in a shady forest and offers well-equipped routes ranging from the lower Levels of Difficulty right up to 6c+. The beautiful woodland, with its shady trees, is an ideal playground for families and beginners. And if you’re looking to cool off afterwards, the idyllic Mieming swimming lake is just a five-minute drive away. From 19 pm, entry is free.

3. Flämenwandl | Leutasch

On the beautiful Seefeld Plateau lies the so-called Flämenwandl, which is unfairly overshadowed by the ‘Chinesische Mauer’! Its short access, along with barbecue areas and benches right by the stream, make this Rock Climbing Area a real highlight! The routes range from 3a to 6b+ and are in the shade for most of the day. And if you’re still feeling too warm, you can cool off in the stream alongside a chilled beer.

4. Ehnbach Gorge

The beautiful Ehnbachklamm gorge near Innsbruck is ideal for hot summer’s days thanks to its lovely, wide stream bed and the shade provided by the trees! Lovely slabs and steep routes await you in the ‘Buchenwald’ sector. You’ll have shade at the Buchenwandl until around 2 pm, before the sun slowly comes round the corner.

5. Wiesensee

The idea of a Rock Climbing Area and a Kneipp facility being right next to each other is probably just a pipe dream. Not so in the Steinberge region, however, where the Wiesensee Rock Climbing Area brings these two things together.

As well as the many family friendly routes at the lower end of the difficulty scale, there is also a Kneipp facility right next to the Rock Climbing Area! This is highly recommended for cooling off and soothing aching toes after a long day’s climbing!
