60 years of climbing expertise – and still full of surprises

Tirol is an old friend of ours. We feel we know every mountain range, every nook and cranny. After all, between us we’ve got a staggering 60 years’ climbing experience in Tirol – both daunting and wonderful at the same time.

For this issue, we set off once again on a journey through Tirol.

On Swiss stone pines, reef limestone and conglomerate

We climbed amongst Swiss stone pines hundreds of years old in the Kaunertal, along historic routes in theWilder Kaiser, and up the daunting north faces of the Karwendel Mountains. We marvelled at the million-year-old reef limestone of the Steinplatte, the perfect gneiss in theÖtztal, and the Swiss cheese-like, pitted conglomerate rock high above Imst. We had wonderful accommodation providers, swam in emerald-green mountain lakes and revelled in the fresh valley breeze in the shadow of the last ice giants.

„Although I live here and have been climbing in Tirol for 40 years, I am constantly surprised by just how much there is still to discover.“

Caught out: Tirol can do even better

But we also often felt as though we’d been caught off guard on this trip. We hadn’t expected our good old friend to still have so many new facets of its mysterious beauty to reveal. Tirol has much more to offer than the well-known and much-visited tourist trails.

  • the diversity and variety of rock types
  • the various styles of first ascents
  • historic routes, first ascended over 100 years ago
  • modern pleasure climbs
  • wild trad routes from the 1980s
  • endless longlines with up to 38 pitches

This diversity – it is simply unique.

„For me, Tirol – with the Northern Limestone Alps and the Dolomites – is and always will be the land of endless alpine climbing opportunities. Nowhere else can you find such variety in such a small area.“

The Exotic in the Familiar

This summer, we had the chance to discover the exotic in the familiar, the foreign in the nearby, and the new in the old. We can’t wait to see what other surprises you have in store for us in the future.
