1. Wilder Kaiser: Stripsenjoch Via Ferrata

Climb Rock Faces secured once again by a wire rope and enjoy the unrivalled panoramic views from the summit. Is this possible in autumn too? Yes, if you plan your routes carefully and make sure the ascents and descents are short. We’ve selected a few rewarding via ferrata routes that offer summit experiences with stunning panoramic views, whilst also taking the shorter days into account.

Anyone who fancies a final hike up to a Mountain Hut this autumn should pack their rucksack, take their via ferrata kit with them and set off on a hike to the Stripsenjochhaus in the Kufsteinerland region, at an altitude of 1,577 metres. The hut sits on the Stripsenjoch like a stone sentinel overlooking the Wild and Tame Kaiser mountains.

The Stripsenjoch ViaFerrata, with a Level of Difficulty ofC/D, is divided into three sections, with alternative routes available. The route faces south, making it ideal for autumn days – the actual climbing time is around one hour. Those who have already made the ascent the day before and stayed overnight at the Stripsenjochhaus can enjoy a leisurely day in the mountains. Those setting off from the valley will reach the start of the route from the Griesner Alpine Pasture in around 1.5 hours.

2. The Tyrolean High Plateau: Seefeld Panorama Via Ferrata

A real treat for ‘Golden October’: the Seefeld Panorama Via Ferrata/Iron Way in the Seefeld Olympic Region. From the 2,220-metre-high Seefelder Spitze, you can enjoy stunning views across the entire Karwendel mountain range.

The difficulty is rated as moderate (C) – ideal for an autumn trip without too much risk. The tour takes around 3 hours in total, with 1.5 to 2 hours spent on the Via Ferrata itself and the rest for the ascent and descent, assisted by the Uphill Facilities. The Uphill Facilities are open until the end of October, weather permitting.

3. Innsbruck: Wank Via Ferrata

Admittedly, the Wank Via Ferrata/Iron Way near Mieming in the Innsbruck region isn’t a route for late autumn – it’s too high up for that, and the approach and descent times are too long. But in September, in perfect weather, it’s definitely a worthwhile Finishing Point that really puts your strength and stamina to the test.

From the Stöttltörl (2,036 m), you climb along the ridge to the Wankspitze (2,209 m) – the view from the summit is indescribable. Please note: With around 6.5 hours of walking and climbing, this is a proper day trip. Be sure to check the current conditions beforehand and, if necessary, combine the trip with an overnight stay at the Lehnberghaus. A great way to bid farewell to summer and welcome autumn.
