From July 15, 2026 the first section of the Hohe Mut cable car will be closed.
The via ferrata is generally graded at the easier difficulty levels. The lower section has a moderate difficulty of A/B and leads to a wide meadow. From there, the route continues along a narrow path to a junction.The right-hand route is well suited for beginners (A/B), while the left-hand variant follows an airy and scenic climb (C) along the striking rock pillar directly up to the Hohe Mut.

Access
Take the Hohe Mut cable car from the center of Gurgl to the middle station. From there, follow the forest road for about 25 minutes until a trail branches off to the left. Follow this trail and after a few minutes, turn right to reach the start of the via ferrata. It is recommended to put on your via ferrata equipment at this junction to avoid delays for other climbers at the start. The approach to the via ferrata is well signposted. Total walking time from the Hohe Mut cable car middle station is 45 minutes. Access without cable car: If the cable car is closed, there is the option to hike from the center of Gurgl to the via ferrata entrance (approx. 1:15 h). You can also ride an (E)-bike to the middle station of the Hohe Mut Bahn (approx. 30 min) and hike from there to the entrance. Opening hours: www.gurgl.com/summer
Descent
From the exit of both via ferrata routes, marked paths lead to the Hohe-Mut cable car mountain station. From the easier, right-hand route, it takes about 15 minutes and a few vertical meters to reach the mountain station of the Hohe Mut cable car. The exit of the more difficult, left-hand route is already close to the Hohe-Mut cable car mountain station. The ideal way back to the valley is by cable car directly to the center of Gurgl. There is a refreshment stop at the Hohe Mut Alm, located right next to the Hohe Mut cable car mountain station. Descent without cable car: From the end of the via ferrata, follow the signs to the center of Gurgl. The recommended path is through the Zirbenwald, walking time: 1.5 hours. PLACES TO REST: You can find a place to rest at the Hohe Mut Alm, which is located right next to the top station of the Hohe Mut Bahn. Further opportunities for refreshment can be found by walking towards the town center at the Schönwieshütte or Zirben Alm. Opening hours: www.gurgl.com/summer
Public transport
Enjoy a both comfortable and relaxing train ride to the train station in Ötztal Bahnhof. You get off the train in ÖTZTAL Bahnhof where you change to a public bus or local taxi. The current bus schedule can be found at: http://fahrplan.vvt.at
Journey
The car drive to the Ötztal valley. Situated in Tirol, the Ötztal valley set off in southerly direction and is the longest side valley in the Eastern Alps. The journey with the car leads you through the Inntal valley to the entrance of the valley and further on through the valley. Among the toll motorways you can also use the country roads.
