Via ferratas in the holiday region of Imst – adrenalin rush for climbing freaks!

The Imst holiday region in the Tirolean Oberland is known for its numerous outdoor opportunities for climbing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting and canyoning. It particularly offers many unique climbing possibilities. It is one of Austria’s top climbing spots, providing more than 3.000 sport climbing routes in all difficulties for climbers of all levels - beginners, hobby climbers and pros. The crags are in great condition as they have been well maintained and further developed over the past few years. Austria’s highest climbing wall is also located in Imst.

If you don’t walk to hike down the mountain into the valley, the Alpine Coaster roller coaster takes you back to the base of the mountain in high speed. This is for sure a memorable experience!

4 tips for via ferratas around Imst

  • Hanauer via ferrata:The Hanauer via ferrata is fantastic with its long rop bridge and several variations in all difficulty levels. The easy variation ends at the helicopter landing site, directly next to the mountain hut. To reach the starting point of the via ferrata, it takes 90 minutes.
  • Imster Klettersteig via ferrata/ Maldonkopf:Imster Klettersteig via ferrata is a beautiful, versatile alpine via ferrata with little foot holds in the Lechtal Alps. The type of rock is antiskid limestone. The tour is very well secured. You can descend via the Engelkar pelvis. Starting at the Muttekopfhütte hut, the access hike takes about an hour.
  • Leite via ferrata/Nassereith: The Leite via ferrata in Nassereith is a beautiful route which requires power and endurance. The via ferrata doesn’t have any artificial foot holds. Even though it might look very unspectacular at a first sight, there are several tricky passages. The via ferrata faces South and the access hike is very short (20 minutes) which makes it very attractive. It takes about 1 to 1,5 hours to climb the whole route.
  • Muttekopfhütte/ climbing garden: The via ferrata is short, modern and located close to the Muttekopfhütte hut. It is recommended to families, children and adolescents as well as beginners if you bring the right equipment. Small children might have troubles with the foot holds as they can be far apart. The access hike takes 50 minutes.
