Multi pitch climbing in the Zugspitze region – climbing in alpine surroundings

The Zugspitze region around Ehrwald is a true paradise for climbers of all levels. Recently, many new climbing gardens have been established at the foot of Zugspitze. They offer a great range of all difficulty levels in a magnificent alpine terrain. The region also has several multi pitches, easy to high-alpine hikes and ice climbing possibilities in winter. Besides climbing on rock, there are also other possibilities for outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, golfing or chilling on a mountain hut.

Taking up the cable car going up to the mountain peak from Ehrwald is highly recommended. It takes up to 100 people.

The Zugspitze has one of the most beautiful views in the Alps.

2 tips for multi pitch climbing in the Zugspitze massif

  • Grünstein Nordwand: The Northern face of the Grünstein mountain, which rises behind the Drachensee lake, offers four multi pitch routes. The rock is characterised by slabby, and sometimes fragile, alpine sections. Because of its Northern orientation, the route is also climbable on hot summer days. The route “3 Stürmische Zeiten” is highly recommended - is is 180 m long and can be reached within 30 min from the Coburger Hut. The route is well secured with bolts. The last pitch offers a harder, but still really interesting variation. You can abseil on the route.
  • Plattspitzen Süd: The Plattspitzen Süd wall offers perfect harsh, eroded rock with alpine character. From here, you can enjoy the surrounding mountain world! The area hasn’t been completely established yet as it offers great potential. Besides a climbing garden for sport climbing, it offers six multi pitch routes on the Bergfexe mountain. The 1.100 m long route “Aquaria”, facing west, is particularly recommended. It is a very diverse, alpine climbing route which is well secured by bolts. The access takes about 1,5 hours, starting at the Ehrwalder Bahn. Parts of the way can be done by bike. The descent takes about three hours, leading over a debris field, a fixed rope and another abseiling part back to the bike. The following three multi pitches in the Eastern sector “Wechseljahre der Plattspitzen” are also highly recommended: “Kaisers alte Kleider” (75m), “Strom im Kopf” (130m) and “Durststrecke (Ohne Strom)” (110m). The routes are all well maintained and secured. The access takes about 40 minutes from the hut.
