Beautiful climbing in the Dolomites: multi pitching in Osttirol

The Dolomites in Osttirol are the place to be if you want to experience the mountains! There are many routes and climbing gardens in all difficulties. Very popular spots include Falkenstein, the climbing area around the Dolomite Hut and alpine routes around the Karlsbader Hut. Aside from climbing, the Dolomites are well known for magnificent hiking trails with the option of accommodation in the mountains as well as multi-day trips. A special recommendation is the Hohe Tauern national park with its impressive mountain backdrop!

4 tips for multi pitches in Osttirol

  • Kleine Gamswiesenspitze: The Gamsplatte wall is a very popular multi pitch route. It’s beautiful slab climbing on solid rock. You climb up the North-Eastern wall onto the Kleine Gamswiesenspitze mountain peak (2.454m). The access hike from the Dolomitenhütte parking lot takes 90 minutes. There are seven pitches in the fourth grade, all well secured with bolts and belaying points. To descend, you can hike down via the South-Eastern ridge to the Karlsbader Hütte hut or the Dolomitenhütte hut where you can stop by for refreshments.
  • Laserz: The Laserz mountain offers 14 multi pitch routes for experienced climbers. The Southern wall offers few routes easier than 8. The routes are also very overhanging and the bolts are far apart. On the South-Western wall of Laserz and on the Kanten Köpfl there are moderately to well secured routes. Don’t miss out on climbing the classic multi pitch route “Schinderriß”.
  • Roter Turm: The Roten Turm area consists of eight difficult multi pitch routes, graded from 8 to 9+. The routes are mainly very overhanging and request a lot of endurance and power. The access hike takes one hour from the Karlsbader Hütte hut or 2,5 to 3 hours from the valley.
  • Teplitzerspitze – Haspinger: The Teplitzerspitze mountain can be reached via two multi pitch routes. Both routes are called „Haspinger“ – one leads to the small Teplitzerspitze mountain peak (2.450m), the other one to the big Teplitzerspitze mountain peak (2.613m). The routes are mainly in the graded 3 with a few passages graded 4. Despite the grade, you shouldn’t underestimate the length of the routes.
