Outdoor region in the border region of Tirol: Climbing in Nauders, in the Tiroler Oberland and in Kaunertal

Nauders in Kaunertal is close to the Swiss and Italian border. There are many possibilities for climbing – also for beginners and families. There are several small climbing gardens with easy climbs and an alpine flair. The type of rock is granite. You can go sport climbing and ice climbing, do multi pitches and via ferratas, visit a forest rope park and four family-friendly climbing gardens. However, the Tiroler Oberland also offers a lot of potential for experienced climbers. The climbing garden Laimo for example provides routes from 6b up to 8c. All topos are online available for printing on Climber’s Paradise Tirol!

tips around Nauders, the Kaunertal and the Tiroler Oberland

  • Lake Reschensee is located in the neighbouring village Graun in South Tirol. The storage reservoir has a church tower standing out of the water as only remaining part of a flooded village. During the summer months the lake is also popular for kite-surfing.
  • Hike up to the Rifflsee Hut („Rifflseehütte“). Alternatively you can also take the Riffelsee Train. Close to the hut, you find the magnificent mountain lake Rifflsee, mountain streams and waterfalls. Next to sheep and horses, you can also see marmots if you’re lucky.
  • The typical inn Gemse in Prutz offers culinary specialities from the region and is highly recommended – particularly if you feel hungry after climbing.
  • One of the best Schnitzel in whole Tirol is served at the inn Stadlwirt in Nauders.
