Climbing holiday in the Tirolean Zugspitze region

Beautiful nature at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain

At the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, you can enjoy an extraordinary holiday in the Tirolean Zugspitze region. The villages Ehrwald, Lermoos, Berwang, Bichlbach, Biberwier, Heiterwang, Lähn-Wengle and Namlos have a lot of summer outdoor activities to offer.

The mountain ranges, Ammergau Alps, Lechtal Alps, Mieming Range and Wetterstein Mountains, border the region. They turn the Zugspitze area into one of the most diverse alpine tour regions. The main attraction of this area is the Zugspitze at 2.962m above sea level, a grand rock massif in the surrounding mountain scenery. Underneath, there are prosperous mountain pastures, imposing rock faces and crystal clear mountain lakes. Another highlight is the Drachensee, close to Coburger Hut. It is the highest situated lake of this region.

With the beautiful scenery and an impressive mountain panorama, a holiday in the Zugspitze area is very unique. Experiencing nature first hand while climbing, hiking or cycling is breathtaking. We put together the best tips for sports enthusiasts in the Zugspitze area.

4 highlights for a sports holiday in the Zugspitze area

  • Climbing routes in all difficulty levels: Good news for those who want to spend their holiday at the foot of the Zugspitze area: Recently, many new climbing gardens in all difficulty levels have been established at the foot of Zugspitze. There are several climbing gardens close to Ehrwald. They can be reached within approximately 50 minutes and offer a great range of all difficulty levels in a magnificent alpine terrain. In summer, the Southern routes are ideal to climb very early in the morning. You are back in Ehrwald in no time.
  • Cycling at the foot of Zugspitze: More than 100 marked bike paths with an overall length of 4.330 km and 100.000 metres in altitude make the Zugspitze region an eldorado for mountain bikers and cyclists. The region is distinguished with the quality seal of „Mountain Bike Holidays“ and offers both delightful routes close to the valley and spectacular single trails in alpine terrain. The mountain bike route from Lermoos to Gartner Alm is highly recommended due to its medium level and its possibility of stopping off at a beautiful mountain hut. Distinctly more demanding is the three-day loop trail around Zugspitze. With its 200km lengths and 5.000 metres in altitude, it is an unforgettable holiday experience. The short freeride route, “Forrest Thunder”, in Lermoos is an action-packed route for experienced cyclists. To get around comfortably you can also rent e-bikes. For mountain bikers who want to get high up the mountain on their holiday, all mountain lifts, except for the lift “Zugspitzbahn”, offer a free bike transport.
  • Hiking pleasure for everyone: Gentle hikes to mellow mountain pastures or demanding hikes up to beautiful mountain peaks, fascinating paths and trips to idyllic mountain lakes – the Zugspitze region offers a lot for everyone who loves hiking in their holidays. The easy loop hike from Bichlbach to the pittoresque Auer Waterfall is also recommended for children. However, the mountain tour from Bichlbach via the via ferrata Alpenrosensteig to Lermoos is significantly more demanding. The hike is particularly recommended when the alpine rose is blooming. Highlight of each mountain holiday in the Zugspitze region is hiking up the Zugspitze (2.962 m) itself. You can reach Germany’s highest mountain from Ehrwald via the “Gatterl”. Several mountain guides offer guided routes in all difficulties in the Tirolean Zugspitze region.
  • Waterfun on the mountain and in the valley: Crystal clear mountain lakes, untouched bathing lakes and outdoor baths - you have plenty of options when it comes to cooling down on hot summer days. The three mountain lakes, Seeben Lake, Drachen Lake and Igel Lake, are beautifully located amidst the mountain scenery and can be reached via different hiking trails. If you prefer to stay in the valley, you can refresh yourself in Heiterwanger Lake or bathing lake Bichlbach. If the weather is bad, visit the indoor bath in Ehrwald.

4 Daily trip in the Zugspitze region

The Zugspitze region also has a lot to offer for those who want to enjoy their holiday in nature without being sportively active. We have a several recommendations:

  • Cable car up to Zugspitze: The Zugspitze has one of the most beautiful views in the Alps. If you don’t want to hike up to the top, you can take the cable car to the mountain peak from Ehrwald, which takes up to 100 people. vi In the „Faszination Zugspitz“ adventure museum, you can learn a lot about the history of the Zugspitze.
  • Having fun tobogganing in summer: You can go summer-tobogganing in Biberwier. The toboggan run is 1.300m long and has more than 40 turns from the midway station, Marienbergbahn, into the valley. It is indeed an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
  • Cruising over the Heiterwanger Lake: Cruising on a passenger ship over the Heiterwanger Lake is a unique experience. The combination of crystal clear water and an imposing mountain scenery in the background provide an exceptional impression of nature. The cruise can be well combined with a hiking tour. They also offer romantic evening cruises.
  • Experience nature on adventure tracks: Children can learn a lot about the local flora and fauna while having fun on the adventure tracks in the Zugspitze region. They can discover nature in a playful way, e.g. on the water adventure path „Zugspitzi am Gaisbach“. At the end of the track, a treasure can be found.
