Pitztal, located in the district of Imst in Oberland. The valley is 40km long and is home to the villages of Arzl in Pitztal, Wenns, Jerzens and St. Leonhard in Pitztal. The Pitze stream flows through the valley. The valley is approximately 60km to the West of Innsbruck and is easy accessible via the motorway. At the end of Pitztal, you will see Northern Tirol’s highest mountain - the Wildspitze (3.768m). At the foot of this imposing mountain peak in the Ötztal Alp, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama view: idyllic mountain lakes, mellow mountain pastures and harsh mountain peaks.

We put together a selected choice for an active holiday:

Aiming high in Pitztal – 5 tips

  • Climbing with glacier view: Whether you are a beginner, hobby climber or expert - Pitzal offers climbing opportunities for everyone. The climbing park Jerzens-Hochzeiger in Oberland offers routes from the second to the fourth difficulty grade and is therefore perfect to start climbing. Families are invited to visit one of the four certified climbing gardens. For a special climbing adventure close to the Pitztal Glacier, visit the climbing garden Gletscherstube. The Oberland has also several via ferratas to offer. You can either start in Arzl or at the climbing park Pitztaler Gletscher. In winter, Pitztal is an eldorado for ice climbing: it offers more than 30 ice climbing routes up to 160m.
  • Hotspot for trail runners: Pitztal is well known as a holiday destination for runners of all levels. Experts can take part in the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail annual race which covers 95km and 6.500 metres in altitude. Pitztal also offers less extreme trails - such as the 8km long trail from Mandarfen, along the stream Pitze, to Taschachalm and back. Beginners can attend free try-outs and train their endurance in multiple-day camps. The „Pitztal Trail“ is a newly established trail which leads through the valley in 4 stages.
  • Up to Tirol’s highest mountain lake: The Rifflsee mountain lake is Tirol’s highest located mountain lake at an altitude of 2.232m. The lake can be reached by the Rifflsee cable car. From there, you can take a one-hour walk around the lake. Alternatively, you can hike up to Rifflsee from Mandarfen through the Hirschtal valley on a well-marked hiking path.
  • Pitztaler Almenweg: The Pitztaler Almenweg is a hiking path that connects five Alpine farms, so-called Alms. This hike is highly recommended, and not only because of its stunning panorama view onto the surrounding 3.000m high mountains. It is divided into two stages and leads to the Söllbergalm (1.849 m), Mauchelealm (1.850 m), Neubergalm (1.920 m), Tiefentalalm (1.880 m) and to the Arzler Alm (1.875 Meter) as well as to the alpine hut Kaunergrathütte (2.817 Meter). From every hut, a descent to the valley is possible.
  • Wildspitze – Tirol’s roof: The ascent of Northern Tirol’s highest mountain, Wildspitze (3.768m) is a highlight of every holiday. The tour leads via the mountain Mittelbergferner and requires alpine experience, surefootedness and glacier equipment. The Alpin Center Hochzeiger and the  Bergführervereinigung Pitztal offer guided tours.

4 more outdoor-tips

For those who prefer a less active holiday but still loves to spend their time outdoors, we put together a list of must-do’s in Pitztal:

  • Recharge your batteries at the waterfall: Visit the waterfalls of the Pitztal Power Places on hot summer days: Walkable platforms allow to go close up to more than 50 waterfalls. The cold and clear glacial water is very refreshing. The Sölbergwasserfall viewing platform at the entrance of St. Leonhard is particularly recommended due to its spectacular construction.
  • Café 3.440: The Café 3.440 is located at the Pitztal Glacier. It is Austria’s highest cafe with a stunning view onto the surrounding glacier and mountain world. The perfect place to let a wonderful vacation day come to an end - with cake and coffee!
  • With horses into the mountains: Horseback rides are highly recommended in Pitztal! On the back of Tirolean Haflinger horses, you can take high alpine rides up to mountain huts, such as the Tiefentalalm. You can also decide to stay over night.
  • ZirbenPark Pitztal: Swiss Pines have a positive impact on our health and well-being. The ZirbenPark am Hochzeiger park is a family-friendly theme path through a Swiss pine forest. You can learn a lot about the “Queen of the Alps”. The highlight of the ZirbenPark is the 12m high “ZirbenZapfen-Erlebnisturm”. You can also craft wood shavings yourself and take home the wood chips for a “Swiss Pine pillow”.
