Climbing holiday in the Seefeld Olympia region

Tirol’s sun plateau

The Olympia region Seefeld is located on a high plateau with an altitude level of 1.200m. It only is 20km away from Innsbruck, the capital city of Tirol. The Karwendel Nature Park is the biggest of its kind in the Eastern Alps. Together, with the Wildmoos Nature Preserve and the Wetterstein Mountain Range, the area provides a unique atmosphere. While snow is guaranteed in winter, a mild and sunny climate is very welcoming for many different outdoor activities.

The five villages, Leutasch, Mösern-Buchen, Reith, Scharnitz and Seefeld offer plenty - for sportspeople, families and those who prefer relaxing vacations.

Tips for a sportive holiday in the Seefeld Olympia region

  • Traditional climbing on the plateau: Climbing has been a tradition in and around Seefeld since 1922. Pioneers of climbing, like Bernhard Prommer, Reini Scherer, Heinz Zak and Bernhard Hangl, opened many via ferratas and climbing gardens. For example, a very popular crag for sport climbing is the Chinesische Mauer. While this area is mainly for experienced climbers, Flämenwandl or Sonnenplatten offers many climbs for beginners and hobby climbers. The climbing gardens have been regularly maintained by the Austrian Alpine Club “Mauerfix”. Visit their homepage for more information about climbing and maintenance.
  • Cycling through the beautiful countryside: If you cycle for pleasure, the Seefeld holiday region is the perfect place to be. You can easily discover the plateau by bike, not having to worry about hard and steep ascents. The bike path network is both well established and well marked. One special recommendation is the bike tour through the valley Leutaschtal. The route is around 20km long and leads along a stream from Leutasch to Lochlehn/Unterleutasch and back. Another possibility for a comfortable bike ride is to rent an e-bike.
  • Hot-spot for mountain bikers: The Seefeld holiday region offers a network of more than 570 km well-established mountain bike routes for both beginners and experts. Several stages of the „Bike Trail Tirol“ lead through the region. Another recommendation is doing a tour up to one of the surrounding mountain huts, such as the hut Pfeishütte. A must-do for all mountain bike pros is the classic Karwendel Transition which also is the third stage of the „Tirol Vital Route“.
  • Feel the power of water: In Scharnitz, you can find the source of the Isar stream. Witnessing the change between the idyllic mountain brook and roaring gorge is absolutely worth seeing. A special recommendation is a “Canadier-day trip” on the Isar, where you can paddle on the stream.
  • Hiking: 650km of well-marked hiking trails guarantee a verstile hiking holiday in the Seefeld Olympia region. The wide panorama trails, such as the flat path Adlerweg, are suitable for running, pleasant walks and barrier free hiking, as well as for family with little children.
  • 3 themed paths: The Seefeld Olympia region offers three themed paths: „Seefelder Skisport Spur“ and „Eiszeit-Weg“ give an insight into the history of ski sport in the region, as well as the geological development of the region. On the „Mental Power Weg“ themed path, you can make a journey to your inner self.

More excursion tips in the Seefeld Olympia region

A successful holiday doesn’t necessarily mean a sportive holiday. The region has many more outdoor activities to offer.

  • Water fun for hot summer days: Only 15 minutes away from Mösern, is an idyllic mountain lake – the  Möserer Lake. With an altitude level of 1.292m, it is a perfect place to cool down on a hot summer day. It is easily accessible by car or by short hike. Two more highly recommended lakes on the plateau include the Lottensee and Wildmoossee – both accessible from Möserersee.
  • Relaxation on cool days: The Alpine Bath Leutasch and the Adventure Bath of the Sports and Congress Center Seefeld offer great opportunities to relax when the weather is less than ideal. The sauna is very popular amongst Tiroleans.
  • Karwendel Nature Park: Visiting the Karwendel Nature Park, Austria’s biggest nature park, is a must-do on a holiday in the Seefeld Olympia region. The area has been under conservation since 1928 and is home to rare local flora and fauna. The untouched nature is surrounded by an impressive backdrop of the Karwendel Mountains. Guided tours are offered.
  • Leutasch’s “Ghost Gorge”: Hiking through the Geisterklamm or “Ghost Gorge” in Leutasch is an unforgettable experience for the whole family. The mysterious gorge can be reached by three paths. If you are lucky, you might even meet goblins or water dwarfs, who live in the “Ghost Gorge” in Leutasch.
