Climbing holiday in Innsbruck

Alpine mountain world and urban flair

Innsbruck offers the perfect combination of mountain activities and cultural experience in the city. It has plenty of alpine charm and is very popular for visitors of all ages. The ragged mountain peaks of the Nordkette reach high above the city. On the South side, there is the smooth hill top of the Patscherkofel. Next to Innsbruck, there are five other regions: the holiday villages close to the city (Kematen, Rum, Völs and Zirl), the Western holiday villages (Axams, Birgitz,

Grinzens, Götzens, Mutters, Natters) and the Southern holiday villages (Aldrans, Ampass, Ellbögen, Igls-Vill, Lans, Patsch, Rinn and Sistrans). The Kühtai-Sellraintal areas and the sun plateau around Mieming, in middle of Tirol, belong to the region of “Innsbruck and its surroundings”.

The individual character of the villages and scenery guarantee a diverse summer holiday. The hospitality of the people as well as the impressive, partly high alpine mountain panorama turn Innsbruck and its surroundings to an ideal holiday destination for sportive vacationers and city tourists. There is always a lot to do – from snowboarding and skiing in winter to climbing, hiking and mountain biking in summer. Innsbruck and its surroundings have a lot to offer for explorers of all levels.

The best tips for sportive vacationers in Innsbruck

  • Climbing close to the city: Innsbruck holiday villages offer many sport climbing routes and multi pitches of all difficulties, all year long. There are well known via ferratas on the Nordkette and sport climbing on the Martinswand in Kranebitten. Rugged rocks and steep walls provide an ideal opportunity for wonderful experiences. The Naturpark Karwendel is also a very popular climbing destination.
  • Hiking in the mountains: The area offers a wide range of hiking opportunities. The backyard mountain, Patscherkofel, is a must-do on a holiday in Innsbruck. You can also take the cable car from Igls up to the summit station to enjoy a wonderful panorama onto Innsbruck, the Nordkette and the valley Inntal. The easy path, Zirbenweg, leads through the „Patscherkofel-Zirmberg“ nature reserve and up to the idyllic Tulfeinalm. The Peter-Anich- Höhensteig requires more endurance and leads from Oberperfuss, through the Stubai Alps, up to the hut Peter-Anich-Hütte in Rietz. Vacationers who prefer calm mountain paths, are recommended to go onto the “Sellraintaler Hüttenrunde” - a circular hike with seven stages, leading through the high alpine surroundings of the Sellrain and Stubai Alps. Each stage can also be done as a single day trip.
  • Cycling like mad: Innsbruck and its surrounding has become a hotspot for mountain bikers and road racing cyclists. It has a lot to offer for explorers of all levels: Teasy bike trips along the Inn, extensive road racing routes or challenging mountain bike trails. The downhill singletrail in the Muttereralmpark as well as the Hungerburg-Trail are highly recommended. The Nordkette Singletrail is for experts only - it is considered as the most demanding downhill trail in Europe. You can also explore the area on an e-bike. Every week, free guided tours are offered in Igls, Götzens, Gries im Sellrain and Axams.
  • Cooling down in refreshing water: The numerous outdoor baths and bathing lakes in and around Innsbruck offer a great opportunity to cool down on hot summer days. There are several outdoor baths such as Tivoli in Innsbruck, Axams or Völs. Those who prefers natural waters can cool down in Lanser See or Natterer See.

Aside from sport, culture plays an important role in Innsbruck and its surroundings. We put together a list of attractions for a city trip to Innsbruck.

Urban feeling in Innsbruck: 3 tips

  • Strolling through the capital city of the Alps: Innsbruck, the capital city of Tirol, has a lot of alpine charm and is very popular for visitors of all ages. Next to historical buildings such as the Golden Roof, the Hofburg, the Dome of St. Jakob and the building in the more than 800-year-old old town, Innsbruck offers a wide range of modern architecture: the famous ski jump was designed by Zaha Hadid, the shopping center Kaufhaus Tirol by David Chipperfield. Together with the shopping center Rathausgalerien and the redesigned Maria-Theresien-Straße, Innsbruck provides a open-minded, urban flair. Strolling through the city and doing some shopping is a must-do on a holiday in Innsbruck and its surroundings!
  • Ambras Castle: Ambras Castle was built by Archduke Ferdinand II during the Renaissance period. It is considered as one of the most popular tourist attractions of Innsbruck. The "Kunst- und Wunderkammer" (Chamber of Art and Curiosities) as well as an extensive portrait gallery featuring paintings of numerous members of the House of Habsburg are highly recommended. The famous Spanish Hall and the beautiful gardens are very inviting for strolling around.
  • Up to the Nordkette: Visit the top of the North Chain/ Nordkette: Hafelekar. It’s a worthwhile experience both in summer and winter. You can take the train and cable car designed by star architect Zaha Hadid directly from the city either to the zoo Alpenzoo, Seegrube (1.905m) or up to Hafelekar (2.256m). There are also three restaurants on the mountain should you like a break during your adventure. The panorama view up there onto the surrounding mountains and the city is absolutely stunning!
