Climbing holiday in the mountain area Steinberge

An unforgettable experience

The Tirol-Salzburg border region offers a large range of outdoor activities. It consists of the regions Saalfelden Leogang, Salzburg Saalachtal and PillerseeTal to the Kitzbühel Alps. Especially climbers who love to spend their holidays on rock get their money’s worth. Both mountain areas are part of the Northern Limestone Alps and offer routes in all difficulties. The remote Steinberg Mountains are very appealing. They offer a great diversity of outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking, mountain biking or swimming.

The best tips for an active holiday in the Steinberg Mountains

  • Eldorado for alpine climbers: The Loferer and Leogang Mountains have a lot to offer: from familiy-friendly climbing gardens, ten challenging via ferratas, more than 1.000 sport climbing routes and numerous alpine multi pitches. The route „Pinzgawurm“ is one of the longest alpine sport climbing routes. Another recommendation is the impressive Steinplatte the Tirol-Salzburg border region.
  • A versatile hiking region: The Steinplatte plateau in the border triangle Tirol, Salzburg and Bayern offers tours of each difficulty level for people of every age. In summer, you can take the cable car which takes you up to a magnificent scenery characterised by lush alpine fields. The hike up the summit cross of the Steinplatte is short but worthwhile. Hiking up to Fellhorn is more challenging, but still very beautiful (1.764 m) Another recommendation is the PillerseeTal valley in the Kitzbühel Alps: In Fieberbrunn, Hochfilzen, St. Jakob in Haus, St. Ulrich am Pillersee and Waidring, you can enjoy both alpine tours and easy, short hikes. The hikes from Fieberbrunn up to the peaks Bischof  and Wildseelodergipfel are highly recommended.
  • Cycling in the Steinberg Mountains: While you can ski down on the pistes in winter, there are several mountain biking tours in summer. In 2015, the regions Brixental, Hohe Salve, St. Johann in Tirol and PillerseeTal in the Kitzbühel Alps were certified as „Approved Bike Area”. They offer a great range of diverse cycling routes and single trails with a total length of 800km. The Lisi Osl Trail is highly recommended for both downhill mountain bikers and beginners on single trails. The Fleckalm Trail is the longest single trail in Tirol - with a downhill route of more than 7,7km and about 1.000 metres in altitude. Another recommendation for mountain biking is the Steinplatte, for example up to the Loferalm via the Pass Strub. You can even transport your bike in the cable car. The „TransKITZalp“ is a very beautiful, but demanding route: it is a 4-day route through the Kitzbühel Alps with more than 5.400 metres in altitude.
  • Splashing in Alpine water: The Waidring bathing lake, the refreshing Pillersee lake in St. Ulrich am Pillersee and the Lauchsee lake in Fieberbrunn are perfect to cool down on a hot summer day. If the weather is bad, you can visit the Aubad in Fieberbrunn or the indoor bath in St. Ulrich.
